One of the primary purposes of the University of Akureyri is to acquire knowledge and disseminate it to the community. The University is both pleased and obliged to cultivate its mission through partnerships with a number of parties inside and outside the academic community. Partnerships are of various types, ranging from communicating with the alumni association (Góðvinir), to collaboration with companies that want to promote scientific knowledge by awarding grants, providing professional input, or engaging in other forms of cooperation. The University of Akureyri is also involved in foreign research collaboration and student and faculty exchange partnerships. With the increased availability of distance studies, partnerships with continuous education and training centres across the country has increased. The University of Akureyri disseminates knowledge and copperates effectively with schools at all educational levels in the school town Akureyri.

Collaboration among the public higher education institutions in Iceland began formally in August 2010. The objectives are, firstly, to strengthen the Icelandic universities in teaching and research; secondly, to increase efficiency in managing the universities; and thirdly, to ensure that university studies are offered across the country. The project has been named the University Network (Háskólanetið). The partners are the University of Iceland, University of Akureyri, Agricultural University of Iceland and Hólar University College. Among the outcomes of this collaboration are the visiting studies (gestanám), facilitating student exchanges between the universities.
