The continuing education at UNAK seeks to offer comprehensive continuing education and re-education at the university level, with a view to the needs of customers and economy of operation as a guideline. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of specialists in each field to man teaching positions. In the planning of courses/study, cooperation is exercised with numerous individuals in industry, within companies, institutes and associations. Most of the courses will be in University of Akureyri academic disciplines associated with health and social sciences, pedagogy and education, management, finance and operations.

Preparatory courses for university first year students in mathematics, chemistry and financial accounting are administered by the Continuing Education section in cooperation with the schools of health, education, business and science.
Cooperation has been exercised with the School Development Centre on credit bearing courses for managers and academic staff at all university levels. Specialists of the school development programme have also taught in courses, supported by the Ministry of Education and designed for primary school teachers.
Italian has been taught for years at Símenntun (Continuing Education) by means of financial support from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and these courses are electives for UNAK students.
Cooperation with the academic administration is exercised concerning reservations of classrooms and distance learning. Courses and students are also connected to a web study environment. Salaries and invoices are paid by the University accounting service (Financial, Staff and Administrative Section).
