A full position of assistant or associate professor of law with emphasis on the criminal law and criminal legal process at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
The University of Akureyri seeks an assistant or associate professor of law with a sound knowledge of the general concepts and principles of law, in particular in the fields of criminal law and criminal legal process. The applicant is required to be able to participate in academic research in these fields as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in law and undergraduate courses in police science. The successful candidate must be able to participate actively in the implementation and development of flexible learning. The unique programmes in legal studies at the University of Akureyri are based on progressive, flexible studies without any distinction being made between on-campus study and distance learning.
The primary emphases of legal research and teaching at the University of Akureyri are twofold: a) the Icelandic legal system and its development considered in an international, comparative and theoretical light; and b) international law, with emphasis on polar law and European cooperation. The University of Akureyri offers a three-year 180 ECTS programme leading to a BA in Law and a two-year 120 ECTS, programme at the Master's level that concludes with an ML degree. In addition, the University offers the following studies in Polar Law:
- 120 ECTS Master's degree programme leading to an MA degree
- 90 ECTS Master's degree programme leading to an LLM degree
- 60 ECTS study at Master's level leading to a Graduate Diploma
- Individual courses in Polar law leading to a certificate
Currently there are about 90 students in the Law Department. The department is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, which counts 28 Faculty members and over 600 students.
The position is available from January 1st, 2019, or as agreed up on. The conditions of employment are based on a five-year term, but the party concerned can thereafter request an indefinite term of employment, in accordance with Regulations No. 258/2016 on the Work of the Evaluation Committee and Hiring of Faculty at the University of Akureyri. Advancement to the position of Professor on appointment is possible, if the applicant has the competence required, according to the assessment of the evaluation committee.
The main projects involve research and teaching, both at undergraduate and masters level, administrative duties, the development of flexible learning and establishment of doctoral degree studies in law at the faculty. The immediate supervisor is the Head of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. The job location is in Akureyri, Iceland.
Required education and qualifications
- Applicants shall possess knowledge and experience corresponding to international criteria, as confirmed by the opinion of the evaluation committee or by a doctoral degree awarded by a recognised higher education institution, cf. Act on Public Higher Education Institutions No. 85/2008, article 16(1)
- The applicant shall in his/her application demonstrate competence to conduct research in the general concepts and principles of law
- Teaching and administrative experience at university level are desirable qualifications and a record of academic publication is essential
- Experience of work in the legal profession is desirable
- The applicant must have good people skills and organisational competence
- The applicant shall, furthermore, be required to participate in the development and implementation of flexible learning in law and the establishment of a doctoral study programme
- It is essential that the candidate is able to teach in English and basic knowledge of Icelandic is desirable
- The assessment of applications takes into account how well the applicant concerned satisfies the requirements of the law department at the University of Akureyri

- A detailed account of the applicant’s education and professional career, scientific work, and teaching experience
- The applicant shall present his/her research plans
- Confirmed copies of all relevant diplomas
- Letters of reference concerning the applicant’s teaching and management related work, as appropriate
- Three reference persons shall be designated, one of whom should preferably be the applicant’s immediate supervisor in the present or earlier employment
- The scientific publications considered by the applicant to be his/her best works (up to three publications). If a publication has more than one author, the applicant shall describe his/her contribution to the work

The salary is in accordance with the Collective Agreement on Salaries and Work Conditions of the Union of University Teachers at the University of Akureyri (FHA) and the Minister of Finance.
