M.Sc. in Natural Resource Sciences

On completion of B.Sc. studies, an international, research related master´s degree programme in natural resource sciences is offered. The master´s degree study comprises five fields of study; environmental, energy, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture studies. The admission requirement is a B.Sc. degree from an accredited university institute including a first rate grade in a subject relating to the proposed master´s degree studies.

The study is individually oriented and main emphasis is placed on the master's degree project and that students acquire command of academic work procedure. Master's degree projects will in most cases relate to some research projects conducted by employees at each time. The study comprises two years and amounts to 60 credits, of which the master's degree project accounts for 30-45 credits and courses amount to 15-30 credits. The student takes the course phase of the master´s degree programme partly at the University of Akureyri and at other Icelandic universities, but mainly at research universities abroad as determined by the master´s degree examination committee in each instance. The master´s degree examination committee prepares a study programme for each student and decides on the weight of the master´s degree project and the number and content of the necessary courses, ensuring thus that every master´s degree student commands the requisite professional knowledge, methodology and technical expertise to carry out his master´s degree project.
