The B.S. program in Biotechnology provides a strong and interdisciplinary foundation for further study and work in various branches of biotechnology. Biotechnology refers to any use of living cells or microorganisms, including genetically altered organisms or parts thereof, in industry, for research or in other projects relating to solving problems in food processing and handling industries, animal food processing and other related industries, in the environment, in the field of health services or in the field of renewable energy resources.
Basic applied science subjects are taught during the first two years and more specialised biotechnology and business subjects later on.
The aim is to render students sought after for work on the varied projects in the field of biotechnology and for independent operations in the further value development of the natural resources of the country in the ocean and on land and for improving people´s health. The programme values close collaboration with companies operating in the industry.
School Electives
Electives are taught, if the criteria of minimum participation allow. Normally the criterion calls for the registration of 10 students in each course. The number of elective courses offered each semester is limited. Students can take general courses at the University of Akureyri or other Icelandic universities as electives. Such an option is, however, subject to the approval of the dean of School in each instance.
