In the context of the conference theme the round-table participants will have opportunity to highlight and sum up what they consider the most important points that have been raised during the conference. After initial statements and a round of discussion between the four participants the audience will be invited to join in with direct questions or brief comments addressed to one or more of the panellists. Apart from direct reflections on the conference proceedings the round-table will very likely discuss the explosive development of the media and communication field with associated problems of both theoretical and methodical nature. Are we headed towards more or less coherence in the field? Are we experiencing a change from mass media to media by the masses?

Þorbjörn (born 1943) is professor of Sociology at the University of Iceland where he was instrumental in the establishment of Sociology in the 1970s, Media and Communication studies in the
1980s and the graduate programme in professional Journalism and Mass Communication during the 1990s. He continues to lecture in all three subjects. His research interests are focused firstly on the
uses of the media among young people, secondly on questions of media structure and media history, and thirdly on media professionalism.
Juha Koivisto is a researcher (Academy of Finland / University of Helsinki) and president of the Association of Finnish Media and Communication Scholars. His recent publications include the
book Mapping Communication and Media Research: Conjunctures, Institutions, Challenges, Tampere University Press 2010 (co-authored with Peter Thomas).
Kristin Skare Orgeret, Dr. Art, Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Oslo University College; Norway. Widely involved in transnational media
research. The main focus of most of her academic publications is the role of media and journalism in post-conflict and democratization processes, most of all on the African continent, but the last
years also in South Asia.

Stig Hjarvard, Ph.D., is Professor and vice-chair at Department of Media, Cognition and Communication at University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He has published books and articles on media
history, journalism, globalization, ratings analysis, media and religion, and mediatization theory. He is editor of the international journal Northern Lights and has headed numerous research
projects like Media in a Globalized Society (1999-2001), The Nordic Research Network on the Mediatization of Religion (2006-08) and Newspapers and Journalism in Transition
(2007-10). He is vice-chair of the newly formed TWG of ECREA on “Mediatization”.
Margareta Melin, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer/associate
professor in Media and Culture studies at the School of Arts and Communication (K3) at Malmö University, Sweden. Her research lies in the cross-road between cultural studies, feminism,
journalism, pedagogy and the arts. She is presently involved in researchprojects on the Inbetween-spaces of Theory and Practice in Media studies. Margareta Melin is the chair of
FSMK, the Swedish national asspciation for media and communication research.
