Primary Health Care in the Community

In this study programme, students will gain deeper knowledge and obtain specialisation in the field of primary health care in Icelandic and international context. This programme will benefit individuals who work within the health care service and would like to work on primary health care development as well as having the possibility of affecting social and educational sectors. In the programme the role of primary health care service is viewed from the standpoint of social responsibility in terms of wellness and health of individuals and families. Special emphasis is placed on a solution-based approach and the development and strengthening of the student as an independent practitioner in interdisciplinary collaboration. The programme includes analysis of opportunities within health care and possibility of further development in the primary health care service as well as gaining knowledge about emergency planning for natural disasters or spread of infectious diseases.

Individual students set goals for themselves within the programme and choose courses that best lays the basis for their research in the field of health care. The academic title is Master of Health Sciences with a focus on Primary Health Care in the Community. A Diploma programme of 40 credits is also available. Sigríður Sía Jónsdóttir, Assistant Professor, is the Department Head of this study programme. She assists students in goal setting and identifying courses that best build the foundation for their Master's thesis.

This 120 ECTS Master's degree programme is divided into 60 ECTS of coursework and 60 ECTS for the Master's thesis. The academic title is a Master's degree in Health Sciences with a focus on Primary Health Care in the Community.

In this study programme, four courses are compulsory, a total of 40 ECTS, plus a Master's thesis.

Students can also attend elective courses at other universities, subject to the approval of the Head of Faculty and the Master's thesis supervisor.
