Valmynd Leit

Greetings from the Dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Sigrún Stefánsdóttir. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest academic unit at the University of Akureyri and offers a wide variety of choice of studies within three fields: Social Sciences, Education, and Law. Teaching methods are varied and students pursue their studies either within the university itself, at study centers located around the country, or simply at home. The academic staff offers personal assistance and is always within easy reach. Students who have graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences give the school a good rating and have gone on to do well professionally.

Newly matriculated students at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences are granted an unusually long time to decide which path they would like to choose, as the first year of study is largely focused on providing a general academic foundation. Subsequently, students can choose between the social sciences, media studies, modern studies, or psychology, fields that all provide diverse options with regards careers after graduation.

The Faculty of Education has created a particularly strong reputation in recent years. Indeed, graduates go on to take on diverse roles in preschools, elementary schools and high schools all around the country. Furthermore, the Centre of School Development works closely with the faculty and works with the country’s schools in strengthening their academic services.

The School of Law offers studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with an international approach and a particular focus on Polar Law. By tackling the subject matter within both a social context and the scope of the humanities, the School of Law has thereby taken the initiative to base the study of law on more than mere reading and rote learning. Alongside Masters Studies in Icelandic law, specialised Masters Programmes in Polar Law are offered in cooperation with the West Nordic Studies programme.
