Welcome

Greetings from the Dean of School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Sigrún Stefánsdóttir. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest academic unit at the University of Akureyri and offers a wide variety of studies within two Faculties: Faculty of Education and Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. Furthermore, the Centre of School Development is operated at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Teaching methods are varied and students pursue their studies either within the University itself, at study centres located around the country, or simply at home. The academic staff offers personal assistance and is always within easy reach. Students who have graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences give the School a good rating and have gone on to do well professionally.

Newly matriculated students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law are granted an unusually long time to decide which path they would like to choose, as the first year of study is largely focused on providing a general academic foundation. Subsequently, students can choose between the social sciences, media studies, modern studies, or psychology, fields that all provide diverse options with regards to careers after graduation. In legal studies, the emphasis from the beginning has been to base the study on more than mere reading and rote learning by tackling the subject matter within both a social context and the scope of the humanities. The latest study programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law is police science which addresses law enforcement in a wide context and gives students a proper foundation in preventing and informing about criminal offences and thus ensuring the safety of civilians.

Over the years, the University’s Faculty of Education has established a strong position in the academic community. The Faculty graduates teachers to work in preschools, primary schools and secondary schools, and graduated students have chosen diverse fields of work all over the country. The Centre of School Development works closely with the Faculty and works with the country’s schools in strengthening their academic services.
