The Faculty of Education at the University of Akureyri offers a three-year, 180 ECTS programme, leading to a BEd degree in Education Studies. This is at the same time the initial part of a five-year programme towards an MEd degree, which is the prerequisite for a Teacher Certificate. On completing a BEd degree, students can also choose to enrol in a two-year Master's programme in Educational Sciences (MA degree).

Within the BEd programme, three elective fields of specialisation are offered; Preschool Studies, Primary School Studies and Sports and Health Sciences. The first year of the programme is mostly common for all students, but in the second year students enter their elective field and in the third year students in the preschool and primary school fields increase their specialisation through a selection of elective courses, while students specialising in sports and health sciences mainly take practical courses in relation to physical education. Students can seek further alternatives with other Faculties of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, or with other Schools/Faculties at the University of Akureyri and other universities.

Students can take part of the programme as visiting students at other Icelandic universities, in accordance with the agreement by the public universities of Iceland on reciprocal access for students to study modules, or as exchange students at foreign universities in accordance with the rules on student exchange. Students should apply for such arrangements to the Credit-transfer Committee of the Faculty of Education after having acquainted themselves with these rules and agreements.
