Research is one of the fundamental aspects of the University of Akureyri. Most of the research work is done by the academic members of the staff
and research administration is in the hand of RHA - UNAK's Research and Development Center. In addition the University has five research institutes:
- RHA - UNAK's Research and Development Centre
- FMSI - The Icelandic Tourism Research Centre
- HHA - The Institute of Health Science Research, University of Akureyri
- School Development Centre of UNAK's Faculty of Education
- Fisheries Centre
