University facilities

Video: Welcome to the University of Akureyri (note that the introductionary text in the video is in Icelandic):

The policy of the University of Akureyri is to provide students with a personal, positive and demanding study environment. Teaching facilities are recent and computer facilities as well as reading and work facilities in the library are exemplary.

Teaching facilities

Teaching is conducted in two buildings at the University of Akureyri campus (Norðurslóð) called Sólborg and Borgir, in a unique university campus area in the heart of the town of Akureyri.

Reading rooms

Facilities intended for reading and home study are situated at the Sólborg Library and in Sólborg section O. University buildings are normally open 8:00-22:00 hrs. However, at the beginning of their studies, students receive smart cards that give them access to the reading and work facilities at all hours. Those who decide to do their home assignments in the campus area often experience lively discussions with fellow students e.g. on their studies and social life.

IT helpdesk

Students have access to library computers, specialized equipment and software. Students can seek out assistance at the IT helpdesk if they have any IT issues. There is a facility for students to print their assignments and bind them together.

The helpdesk is at the library reception and is open Monday-Friday from 8:00-16:00

Library

The library is situated in spacious housing at Sólborg where there are facilities for reading and computer use. It is a research library and tailors its purchases of material mostly according to the requirements of the University faculties and the research conducted at the University. At the library, students have access to work rooms equipped with computers. The library is open 8:00-16:00 hrs. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 8:00-18:00 Tuesdays and Thursdays. The library is closed during weekends.

Cafeteria

At Sólborg there is a cafeteria where staff and students can sit down when they have the time and chat over a cup of coffee. During workdays the cafeteria offers hot meals at noon and in the afternoon there is always something tasty with the coffee. The cafeteria is open workdays 8:00-15:30 hrs.

Fitness and exercise room

For those interested in improving their health and wellbeing there is a fitness and exercise centre at Sólborg. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 07:30 - 14:00 hrs. and from 16:00 - 21:30 hrs. The centre is closed during class hours.

School town of Akureyri

Akureyri is a well-established school town. It is the only municipality outside the capital that offers schools at all levels, i.e. preprimary schools, primary schools, secondary schools and a university. The town population is approximately 17,000, and about a third of the inhabitants work in the town schools during winter.
