The Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programmes leading to the B.A. degree in the following subjects:
• Media Studies
• Modern Studies
• Psychology
• Social Studies
Starting in autumn 2011, all four programmes are offered on a distance learning basis as well as on campus. Students are thus able to follow these programmes regardless of their location, as long as they have access to a high-speed internet connection. Distance learning students visit Akureyri for one week-long intensive study periods near the beginning of each sememster.
The student selects one of these subjects for a 180 credit major, to be completed in three years.
Students may also combine two subjects into a minor and major, or two majors.
Minor subject and major subject
• Three year study: 120 credit major and 60 credit minor.
• Four year study: 180 credit major and 60 credit minor.
Two major subjects
• Four year study: 120 credits in each major.
The first year of study consists largely of common courses, making it relatively easy for students to switch major after one semester of study.
Continuous Assessment
All courses in the Faculty of Social Sciences employ continuous assessment, which emphasizes regular assignments and tests instead of a comprehensive exam. This enables students to monitor their own achievment.
