Indigenous peoples and their lands: between ideal and real with special focus on Latin-America.
In her lecture at the Law Forum Christina Binder will examine the land rights of indigenous peoples with special focus on Latin America. An introduction highlights the fundamental importance of indigenous territories for these peoples. It also draws attention to the threats posed to indigenous territories through resource exploitation by governments and third persons (multinational companies). Against that background, an “ideal legal concept” of protection of indigenous peoples’ lands is developed in part two.
Christina Binder is Assistant professor of international law at the Department of European, International and Comparative Law at the University of Vienna. She is member of the “Young Academy” of the Austrian Academy of Sciences where she acts, since June 2011 as member of the governing board. Christina was visiting fellow at the Lauterpacht Center for International Law in Cambridge (2007-08) and at the Max Planck Institut for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg (2008-10).
